Stark, Marion Jean Aufderheide -

Marion Jean Aufderheide Stark

Tullahoma - On March 8, 2018, Marion Jean Aufderheide Stark, age 97, passed away at home surrounded by her children. Jean was born in Lamberton, Minn., and grew up on the family farm, acquiring a love of hard work and a wealth of stories to entertain her family. She graduated from Iowa State College (1943) and worked during WWII as a draftsman in Flint, Mich., where she met her future husband. After the war they settled in Willow Run, Mich., moving on to Ypsilanti, Mich.; Conway, N.H.; and Tullahoma, Tenn., with her husband's work as an engineer.

Jean was known for her green thumb, her pies and cookies, her sewing skills, and her love of children. She was a tireless supporter of her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in all their endeavors. An inveterate letter writer, she enjoyed art and creativity and was talented in pottery, quilting, embroidery, and other crafts. She passed on her love of nature and gardening and her interest in collecting all sorts of things--stamps, rocks, and cow pitchers to name a few--to her family. She taught kindergarten at Faith Lutheran Church for a number of years and served as vocational director at the Tennessee Vocational School for Girls for ten years.

Preceded in death by her parents, Anna Flora MacDougall (1927) and Gustav Wilhelm Aufderheide, stepmother Florence Lillian McCallum, sisters Isabel and Wilma, brothers Ernest and John, and husband Roscoe Clinton Stark. Beloved mother of Anne (Robert) Hill, Richard (Gretchen) Stark, Kathryn (Wendell) Rawls, and Elizabeth (Curtis Patterson) Stark-Patterson. Imaginative grandmother of Amanda Rawls, Matthew (Megan) Rawls, Lizzie (George Locke) Stark, Phoebe Hill, Mary Patterson; great-grandmother of Dylan Rawls, Sloane Rawls, and Roscoe Locke. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will take place on March 17th at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Tullahoma. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Obama Foundation, the First Presbyterian Church of Tullahoma, or The Nature Conservancy.

Doris Jean Ann Heroff says:

I visited Jean in her home and was struck by the orderliness, the peacefulness and the stylishness of her tastes. The landscaping and flowers around the house gave it a park-like feel.

I know she shared her storytelling talents with those who visited her. Her legacy of children who love and support one another is evident. There are very few 90+ year old people who have friended me on Facebook, but she was one who reached out to me in this way. I found it heartwarming to see her listed as a friend and to see that she had "liked" one of my posts. I will send a donation to The Nature Conservancy in her honor.

Bennie Mills says:

Anne, on behalf of the THS Class of 1963, please accept our sympathy on the passing of your lovely mother. Even though we were classmates for only a too brief time, you are very much one of us and your family was a part of Tullahoma for many years. Please visit your former classmates whenever you can.

Maribeth Hartin says:

Oh, your sweet Mom. I haven't taken the opportunity to visit with her as much as I should have but always enjoyed the time we spent together. Since high school I have considered her a dear friend and listening ear. I know she will be sadly missed by the children and grandchildren and all who knew her. Welcomed with open arms by her dear Starkey.

Jeanne and David Wright says:

Dick, David and I were so sorry to hear of the death of your mother. We send our deepest sympathy.

Jean Nichols and family says:

Jean was a faithful and fantastic friend to our family for the past 58 years. She wrote wonderful letters. We all envied her handwriting!

Steve Baker says:

She was my teacher when I was in Kindergarten at Faith Luthern Church around 1968. She was always so patient and caring as a teacher. My time spent as her student is filled with wonderful memories. So very sorry to hear that she has passed. Will keep her and her family in my prayers!
